The Singapore Airlines International Cup is part of the prestigious World Series Racing Championships which links some of the world's top international races in an annual championship. With prize money of S$3 million, it is also one of the richest in the region. Inagurated in 2000 together with the official opening of the Singapore Racecourse in Kranji, the Singapore Airlines International Cup attracts the creme de la creme of the world's top racing nations to race in Singapore. In 2001, the Cup was accorded International Group 1 status and shortly after, was nominated the third leg of the World Series Racing Championship. In 2005, the race was the culmination and the main highlight of the Singapore International Racing Festival which included a super weekend of racing that brought to Singapore representatives from 16 top overseas racing clubs and authorities.
